Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns): by Mindy Kaling

Mindy Kaling is the wonderchild triple-threat of the hit show The Office. She writes, co-stars and directs. I had yet to jump on the bandwagon for reading memoirs of people that haven’t even died yet! That just seems weird to me. You’re 30 and have a life story? I’d better get on doing some cool sh*t. In the introduction to her book Mindy says “This book will take you two days to read…If you’re reading this book every night for months, something is not right.” So right away you know this is not heavy material, no soul-searching, no wisdom or sayings that go onto inspirational posters.

This book was a light fluffy confection of hilarity. She being so young and so successful I was interested in how she got to where she is, and the answer is a good dose of talent combined with an extraordinary amount of luck. At least when it came to getting off the ground. I won’t spoil the tale for you, but there is no doubt that Mindy Kaling is creative, smart, and good at her job. She does write exactly like her character from ‘The Office’ Kelly Kapoor sounds, but that just adds to the feeling that you know Mindy personally and you’d get along great, and she’s the friend that brings ice cream over and makes you laugh.

The book moves along at a fast rate and keeps you enormously entertained, even if the end sections are a bit like a color-by-the-numbers writing; crossed with a 14 year old’s diary. You’ll see what I mean. Keep martinis handy. I for one look forward to what Mindy has in store for us all in the future.

About Deanne

I was born and raised out on the fringes of the rainy Pacific Northwest on fishing boats and cold beaches with only a dog and kittens for company, and so my love of reading and creating stories started very early. My dad would illustrate my early stories and I would listen to him ramble about European history and warfare, eagerly asking questions about Kings, Queens and our own family history. In my adult life I am wife to a brilliant and hilarious web designer and mother to two wonderfully weird children whom I am trying to pass on to my love of learning about the world. I'm an amateur genealogist, amateur photographer and amateur history major haha. I'm good at doing amateur stuff lol. During the last couple years I finally turned my life-long urge to write into a serious endeavor and finished my first novel called (for now) The Stone and the Stars, about a dying dystopian society, and one girl trying to escape it before it collapses. While I finish cleaning up the edges on my novel for the umpteenth time, and before I send it out into the world, I've lately begun a novel about utopia, this time on Earth. I'm finally living up to the nerdy book-worm title my family 'lovingly' pinned on me from the time I was small, and finally doing that one thing I feel like I was born to do. Cliche and silly? Yes!
